The Website Structure That Gets You Recommended by AI

Isaac Dailey·February 27, 2026

Why structure matters more than anything else

In every study we've run, website structure is the single strongest predictor of whether AI recommends a business. The effect size in our chiropractic study was d = 1.14 — that's a massive difference between cited and non-cited practices.

AI reads your website the way a researcher reads a report. If the structure is clear — with a logical hierarchy of pages, clear headings, and organized information — it can find what it needs and cite you. If your site is disorganized, AI moves on to a competitor whose site is easier to read.

The page hierarchy AI expects

Your website should have a clear structure that flows from general to specific:

  • Homepage — what you do, where you are, what makes you different
  • Service category pages — broad groupings of what you offer
  • Individual service/condition pages — one page per specific service
  • About/team pages — who you are, credentials, approach
  • Location pages — if you serve multiple areas

Each page should focus on one topic. Don't combine five services onto one page. AI can't extract a clear signal when everything is mixed together.

Heading hierarchy within pages

Within each page, your headings tell AI what the page is about and how the information is organized. Think of headings like an outline:

  • H1 — The main topic of the page (one per page)
  • H2 — Major sections within the page
  • H3 — Subsections within each major section

AI relies on this hierarchy to understand your content. If your headings are decorative rather than descriptive — or if they're used inconsistently — AI has a harder time extracting useful information.

Dedicated service pages

This is the single most actionable finding from our research. Businesses with dedicated pages for each service or condition they handle are dramatically more likely to be recommended by AI.

For a chiropractor, that means separate pages for sciatica, lower back pain, sports injuries, prenatal care, and each other condition you treat. For a dentist, separate pages for implants, cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign, emergency care, and each major service.

Generic "services" pages that list everything in one place don't work. AI needs a clear, focused page for each topic to understand what you specialize in.

Content formatting that AI can extract

Within each page, format your content so AI can easily pull out key information:

  • Use descriptive headings that match how patients ask questions
  • Keep paragraphs short and focused on one point each
  • Include direct answers to common questions near the top of relevant sections
  • Use bullet points for lists of symptoms, treatments, or qualifications
  • Add FAQ sections with questions formatted as actual questions

A practical starting point

If you're not sure where to begin, start with your most important service. Create a dedicated page for it with clear headings, direct answers to common patient questions, and well-organized information about what you do and how it helps.

Then repeat for your next most important service. Each new page gives AI another reason to recommend you — and another condition or service it can associate with your practice.

Our research shows this approach works across industries. The structure is what matters. Get it right, and AI starts paying attention.
