Why chains struggle in AI search
Corporate chains have advantages in traditional marketing — brand recognition, advertising budgets, multiple locations, and high domain authority. But these advantages don't translate to AI search.

- —Clinical focus. Independent practices tend to specialize, and their websites reflect that specialization with dedicated pages for specific services.
- —Authentic voice. Content written by the actual practitioner tends to be more specific, more opinionated, and more useful than corporate template copy.
- —Structural clarity. Smaller sites are often more organized simply because there's less to organize. AI can navigate them more easily.
The specialization advantage
At its core, the independent practice advantage comes down to specialization. AI recommends the business that best answers the specific question being asked. When someone asks about sciatica treatment, AI looks for the practice with the most clear, detailed, authoritative information about sciatica.
An independent chiropractor who has a comprehensive page about sciatica — causes, symptoms, treatment approaches, what to expect — will beat a chain that mentions sciatica on a generic services page.
What this means for practice owners
If you own an independent practice, the AI search landscape is in your favor. You don't need a bigger budget or more locations. You need to lean into your specialization.
Create dedicated pages for each condition you treat. Write from your clinical experience. Organize your website so AI can easily find and extract your information.
The chains will eventually catch up, but right now the window is wide open. Independent practices that move first will build an advantage that's hard to replicate.
